Fuck Reliance on Proven Hits
Okay, this has gone far enough. When even one of my favourite artists starts sampling songs which are already proven hits/cult classics, and releasing them as singles, it gives me the shits.
As this decade progresses, there’s been a rise in covering songs for commercial exposure, which have already been proven hits. What shits me is that many young, genuine music fans have no idea they’re being fed recycled, proven hits from the 80s; or are completely oblivious to the “irony” of a punk band covering a Paul Kelly song.
I may joke that I want to cover pop songs as metal songs - and christ knows, once I’ve learnt bass properly, that’s something I’ll set my sights on - but it’s for pure entertainment value only. If I want to actually take a fair crack at music, bloody oath I’ll write my own stuff.
There’s nothing I despise more than fucking whimsy, in any shape or form. It took me a little while to learn, but overly reminiscing about the past, and yearning for “the times that were”, is counterproductive to a happy, progressive and evolving existence (and I’m far from talking about just music here). If I hear one more person exclaim “Christy! That 1-2-3-4-5, 6-7-8-9-10, ELEVEN TWELVE! countdown song from Sesame Street is cool and should be a cover song”, I’ll circumcise myself*.
Sure, I love my 90s metal. But I’m equally a fan of music being made in the present day, and more importantly, by bands in Sydney and the area in which I live. There’s a balance.
The 90s has far less of a tangible identity than the decades proceeding it. The “noughties” (eurgh) are already in some danger of becoming completely faceless. I’d prefer this is not so.
You know I’m posting drunk when I’m angry, not writing anything faintly amusing, and ranting about music.
*Last joke about dick-chop operations for the time being, probably.
